No Time For Goodbye by Linwood Barclay

Posted on 23:34 by Unknown
This was the second of Linwood Barclay's books that I have read and I really enjoyed it. The premise of the story is that Cynthia is 14 years old and her parents and brother suddenly go missing. No clues. No note. Nothing. Twenty-five years later, Cynthia is still looking for answers. And, helping her find those answers is her husband Terry. This is a tense, psychological thriller that ultimately lends itself to you asking more questions than actually finding answers. But, that’s what I loved about it. It had me thinking of every possible scenario and discounting the most ridiculous ones.

This story pushed the reader use their own detective skills and along with Cynthia and Terry, try to solve the mystery. The story is told from the viewpoint of the husband Terry. I liked Barclay's style of writing and he develops his characters so well, evolving throughout the book. However, he also pulls a lot of surprises out of the bag that leaves the reader thinking......'oh no I never saw that coming'!!! I read this book in a couple of sittings as I was desperate to find out what actually happened to Cynthia's family and if my theories were right. Some were, most were not! The reader does feel sympathy for poor Cynthia at the terrible torment she is going through and her desperation to find out what happened is palpable.

I was disappointed to see that some of the reviews I had read for this book did not appear to do it justice. Its a good read with some very clever twists and turns. A good read and well worth giving it a chance.

Classic in the Spotlight - Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

Posted on 23:29 by Unknown
The first time I read Jane Eyre I was 15 years old and it was a book I had to study for my O Levels (GCSE's for all you youngsters). When I was first handed the book I wanted to cry as, to me, it looked a huge chunk of book to get through and looked like possibly the most boring thing ever written! How naive I was! What started off as a chore to me ended up being one of my all time favourite books and one I have come back to time and time again. So, whats the book about?

Jane has been orphaned from an early age and is placed in the care of her uncle Mr Reed her odious aunt Mrs Reed. As if things weren't bad enough, Jane has to contend with her horrible and vicious cousin John. However, when Jane's uncle dies, Jane is sent to Lowood School and experiences what could only be described as a pitiful and sad existence at the hands of Mr Brocklehurst who abuses his position of power and is cruel to the extreme to the students at Lowood. The boarding school is without any fun, love or luxuries and the girls often go hungry, cold or cope with cruel and unusual punishments doled out by staff. However, Jane forges a wonderful friendship with another girl at the school, Helen Burns. Helen's stoic attitude towards the difficulties faced at Lowood help to strengthen Jane, enabling her to survive life at the school. Jane will face many challenges during her time at Lowood.
Jane Eyre
Upon leaving Lowood, Jane secures a position as a governess in the employment of Mr Rochester at his huge house Thornfield, where she teaches the lively Adele. Mr Rochester appears to be a dark, broody and emotionless man. But, despite this, Jane finds him intriguing and soon begins to fall in love with him. It also appears that all is not as it seems at Thornfield and Jane's suspicions are further heightened when a strange fire breaks out at the house and is blamed on a servant. Jane is not convinced that this is the case. Just what is going on at Lowood? What secrets are behind its walls? What is Mr Rochester hiding? Can Jane ever find love with him? All questions that will only be answered if you read the book!

I love the character of Jane because despite her many difficulties throughout her young life, she meets them with dignity, resolve and a quiet and unassuming strength. I suppose that in the period the book was written, Jane could have been thought of as a feminist, a trailblazer to working woman's rights. She is a passionate woman who despite an outwardly quiet disposition, will always get her point of view across. However, despite a desire for independence, Jane is often ruled by her heart and struggles with a need for autonomy versus a need to feel part of a family; something she has never had. And, for this, we feel a certain level of sympathy for her and an understanding of why she often behaves the way she does and makes the decisions she does. Let's face it. Everyone wants to be part of something.

For me this book has it all. It's a love story. It's a story of a strong woman. It's a mystery. For those of you keen to dip a toe into the Classics, this is one I would highly recommend. I promise you won't be disappointed. The Kindle version of the book is currently free on Amazon at the moment. Click HERE for your free copy.

Night Watcher by Chris Longmuir

Posted on 23:40 by Unknown
Today sees the launch of the very talented Chris Lonmuir's book Night Watcher released in paperback! Previously only available on Kindle. Congratulations Chris and happy launch day. Read my review and be tempted to buy the book. Its worth it. Chris Longmuir is also a member of FAMOUS FIVE PLUS .  Click on the link to find out more about her.

Nicole is not liked. No surprise as she is not a nice person. In fact, it could be said that she is hated. Her work colleagues despise her, her husband treats her like she is worthless and she does not have one person she could call a true friend. That is, until she meets Julie. However, Julie is not all she seems and Nicole mistakenly places her trust in Julie when she fears she is being stalked. Julie it seems has her own agenda to make Nicole’s life a misery and is fuelled by revenge. Julie believes that Nicole is responsible for the death of her husband and will stop at nothing to ruin Nicole’s life. However, Julie herself soon gets caught up in events that spiral out of control, putting her in danger also.

Despite the fact the no-one really believes that Nicole is being stalked, she is in more danger than she or even the police realises. Someone is waiting and watching in the dark with a purpose and a ‘calling.’ He is hell-bent on completing his ‘mission’ and has Nicole firmly set in his targets. But, just who is he? Is it someone Nicole knows? It seems that all the characters, even those who seem innocent, have their own agendas. Who will stop at nothing to gain the advantage over Nicole in work, love and life itself!

Chris Longmuir creates a very atmospheric story in this book and provides us with some insight into the mind of the ‘Night Watcher’ which serves its purpose – to make the reader look over their shoulder every now and again just to make sure they are alone! I could not fault this book at all except to say that made me sit open mouthed at the end and I looked like an idiot! The book is superbly written and Chris Longmuir is extremely talented, drawing the reader deeply into the story and guessing right to the end.  This is a psychological thriller with so many twists and turns it takes your breath away.

I so look forward to reading more by Chris Longmuir. If you want a book to take you on a roller coaster of a ride and make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end then this is the book for you. All thriller lovers and amateur detectives will consume this book with gusto. I simply could not put it down. It’s not hard to see why Chris Longmuir is a prize winning author.
You can buy the book HERE (UK) and HERE (everywhere else)

The Underside of Joy By Sere Prince Halverson

Posted on 23:41 by Unknown
Ella Beene found a family. A readymade one! She has an idyllic life with her husband and two step children who she loves as though they were her own. However, her world is shattered when her husband is killed and Ella has to fight to keep the step children she has cared for and been a mother to, for 3 years. And the battle is with Paige, their natural mother.
This is a story of love, loss, survival and family. Halverson explores the dynamics between a step mother and a birth mother and tackles issues such as grief, post-natal depression and psychosis.

The reader can almost feel Ella’s heart breaking with the huge burden she now carries. The love that Ella feels for her step children is almost tangible and she is an immensely likeable central character However, Paige is intriguing and the reader guiltily cares about her too.

Halverson has a writing style that draws the reader in and makes them care passionately about all the characters, including Paige. Ella and Paige are very strong women who are prepared to fight for the children they both desperately love. They are battle weary and have their own issues to overcome. Issues they are forced to explore during their fight for ‘their’ children.

Each woman claims she is the only one the children need. This is an excellent read set against a stunning backdrop and beautifully written. Highly recommended.

*This review was written for www.lovereading.co.uk and I received a free advanced reading copy of the book.

Reviewing the Reviewer!

Posted on 00:29 by Unknown
Being totally addicted to books I get immense joy reading a book and subsequently reviewing it. But, lots of people ask me.........'why do you review?' Well, the answer is simple - I do it for two reasons.
Firstly, I strongly believe in supporting authors. The talent it takes to pick a story out of your head and put it onto paper is huge! To craft characters, lives and a plot thrown in to draw a reader in takes skill. It takes even more skill to keep them interested and caring about the characters in the story. Its a magical process that casts a spell over me and I am well and truly spellbound!
Secondly, If I love a book I want the world to know about it! I want to share that little piece of a different world with someone else so that they will get as much pleasure from it as I have done. There's a part of me that feels that every story should be shared and touch as many lives as is possible.
Since the blog launched on Saturday, the support I have been offered from writers, readers and other reviewers has been wonderful so thank you all so much. I'd like to give a special mention to the wonderful Nikki Bywater who herself has a book review blog which you can find HERE . Thanks for all your support Nikki.
The offers I have had from all the lovely people of the literary world in which I seem to virtually inhabit enjoying for quite a while now have been outstanding in their encouragement and support in getting this blog promoted and noticed. Many have offered to feature the blog on their own sites. You are all generous of heart and are a very special group of people. To kick start off a series of promotions featuring me and the blog, the lovely Suzy Turner has interviewed me regarding my tastes in books. So, let me direct you to Suzy's site to read the interview  http://www.suzyturner.blogspot.pt/2012/12/monday-mortals-blogger-jontybabe.html

Are We Nearly There Yet? by Ben Hatch

Posted on 16:30 by Unknown

I originally bought this book because of all the fabulous reviews it has received. I thought to myself.............'it can't be THAT good'! But, my interest was piqued and so I bought the book. Well, what can I say about this book? Firstly, it is the funniest book I have read in a long long time. It is also a very moving book that not only induced tears of laughter but tears of sadness.

Basically, without giving away any spoilers, the book is almost a memoir of Ben and his wife Dinah's trip around Great Britain with their two small children. And why have they taken the mad decision to drive over 8000 miles in their car? Initially I thought because they were bonkers! Well, they are writing a travel guide for families. It’s a brilliant idea and the book really conveys the love that Ben and his family have for one another. The book describes in a laugh out loud style some of the adventures the Hatch clan have. Whilst reading this book in bed I actually woke my husband and daughter up laughing so much. I could see so many aspects of my own life in the book and anyone with children will be able to nod knowingly while laughing at the family's exploits.

The book also explores Ben's relationship with his father and it is during these poignant chapters in the book that you can't help be choked with emotion. I defy you not to cry! Although the book is a travel book it is also very cleverly looking at family dynamics. I fell in love with Ben and his family through this book and am now a huge fan! I cannot recommend this book highly enough. However, I still think Ben and Dinah were mad travelling such a distance over such a period of time with two small children!

STOP PRESS!! I do also believe that the movie rights for the book have just been bought so congrats to Ben Hatch. Richly deserved. It will be a fantastically funny movie. Mr Hatch is indeed a very talented writer.

The book can be bought in paperback and Kindle formats HERE for all you in the UK and HERE for those of you outside the UK.

WELCOME TO BROOK COTTAGE BOOKS!

Posted on 00:30 by Unknown

I am very excited to be launching my new blog today and as the title suggests, it’s all about books. Since becoming a book reviewer and associate reader for a number of sites I felt that I needed a dedicated book blog where I could record reviews of all the great books that I have been fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to read. Some of the books have been very kindly donated by wonderful authors and others have been Advance Reading Copies sent to me by sites and publishers. I feel I am in such a privileged position as I am often one of the first people to read a book before it hits the shelves. I have also been lucky enough to be given some books to read whilst still in manuscript form. To have an author put that level of trust in me is amazing! So thank you!

Of course, I shouldn’t forget my own personal collection of books which is threatening to reach epidemic proportions! My family know that if I leave the house for a loaf of bread I will surely come back with a loaf of bread and a book or two! Reviews of books from my own bookcase are also featured on the blog. So many books, so little time! I am an avid reader and have a keen interest in all things literary and anything connected with books and the publishing industry. I love nothing more than being given a book as a gift. I would happily spend hours browsing book stores and fear that I may need a bigger house to fit all my books in. I almost faint with excitement when I get signed copies of books.

Those of you who know me in the real world know that JB JOHNSTON is not my real name. It's the name that I chose to write under until I am not quite so shy! OK that's a lie. I like being all mysterious! It makes little boring old me appear a bit more interesting! No, that's not true either. I just like having a pen name! Hark at me pretending to be all writer-ish!

So, what’s this blog all about? Well, basically it’s a place for all you other bookish people to stop and have a browse at some reviews, enter some competitions/giveaways and read interesting stuff about the world of books. There will be author interviews too, book tours and other fab stuff! So, if you are an author, reader, publisher or a book nerd (said in the nicest possible way), please visit the blog regularly to read about some great books written by some great authors. Discover the talents of indie authors too and hopefully find your next great read.

I will of course continue to remain dedicated to my own personal blog but would love everyone to pop along and visit me regularly at Brook Cottage Books. I have lots of ideas buzzing around in my head for the blog and hope to have lots of different features. I think I have changed the layout and colour scheme of the blog at least 100 times so don't be surprised if it changes again over the next couple of months. My original concept was to have a very business-like looking blog as eventually I’d like the reviews and work on the blog to lead to a career change for me such as paid proofreading. But, being a shabby chic type of girl, the blog just didn’t look ‘homely’ and inviting enough. So, it was changed yet again! I really hope you like it.

I am more than happy to be approached by authors, sites and publishers for all things bookish and if I can I will post features, stories, reviews and interviews on the blog. If anyone out there has anything in particular they would like posted on the blog I will happily accommodate if I can and if I feel it meets what the blog is about. Keep checking the Blog Diary page for some idea of what is happening on the blog. Check out the blog's Facebook page. I shall be setting up other social networking platforms for this blog and will keep you posted on that too. Details to follow. So, without further ado (drum roll please)……………………I officially open Brook Cottage Books and may all those who drop by for a browse enjoy the experience and come back again. Enjoy!
